Monitoring the condition of balconies for a premium planter subscription service

Upperbloom is a premium subscription-based service that sends specialised staff to install planters on customers’ balconies or chosen outdoor space. Their full-service provision is optimised by a renewal of plants twice a year when their staff come by to update the planters with new plant and flower variants, based on the customer’s selected preferences, the season, and the local conditions.

The challenge

As Upperbloom’s premium customers are mostly based in urban environments, weather conditions can vary greatly from balcony to balcony - some balconies are in the shade and sheltered from the rain for much of the day, whilst other planters might be placed on roof terraces exposed to full sun and rain.

Upperbloom were therefore looking for tools and instruments to better understand the planter performance on different balcony situations in order to optimise the service and product offering for their customers.

They asked us to help build a proof of concept solution, enabling them the tracking and monitoring of the plant/planters conditions on different customer balcony situations.

The service 

We implemented a tailored version of our IoT for Business service to monitor the conditions of the balcony and plants/planter 24/7, to gain as many insights as possible into the environment of the specific location of the planters. 

With this data to hand accessed via the dashboard, Upperbloom is able to monitor the conditions and performance and make sure the right plants are placed on the customers balcony, and when needed, adapt service accordingly. Making sure customers' balconies are decorated with beautiful plants that can flourish under the best conditions possible.
